What #MasterchefAus taught me

For the last 3 months , me and my husband Y have made a ritual to watch MCAus ( Master Chef Australia ) together every night on TV. It became such a constant ( and the only thing we liked most ) that on weekend s when there were no new episodes , we used to watch older season and random episodes of the same. We even tried the MC USA or MC junior USA too but it was nothing like the original Australia version of the show which is on its 10th season now.

Till now I had always watched this show ( and other food shows) purely for the fact that they had less drama , decent food knowledge and it exposed me to some brilliant cuisine and cooking technique. But something was different this time as I watched it with Y.
To give some context , Y is a very good cook and though I can keep my guests and family happy with the food , somewhere my passion for food was on a decline since I got married. Any number of trials would not make me consistently cook brilliantly and it some how made me all the more avoid cooking.
So this time , when we were watching the show , I got somehow more interested in the contestant’s passion about food and the way the judges guided them or discussed food. Me and Y would talk of the same during and after the show and all of this sparked the love for cooking in me again.
In one of the very initial pressure tests , what I realized that following a recipe is as much important as going by the gut when you are cooking something you do not know too well. So I started picking recipes even for the usual daily food I would cook , follow them word to word and the results were much better. More than anything , watching MCAus made me realize the important of giving each ingredient it’s own time to cook and it’s own place in the whole dish. Something’s do not work together and some things can simply elevate a dish. It is all about the care you take on preparing the dish , tasting as you go and being focussed on the dish rather than do it as a chore.

I learned that food too has a soul and when cooked with love , it gives one joy , that I have been missing in my own from some time. You don’t need others to tell you how the food is , if you are aware that you have cooked it with care and attention.
And so , this season of MCAus has not just given me and Y a reason and time to have some tv watching together but also helped me evolve as a person in kitchen.
And that’s a lesson I will want to keep using in 2019 and years to come …
Happy 2019 to you all and may your food be blessed always.

A to Z challenge : Praise the “cooks”

candles flickered,
casting fun shadows on wall
hungry eyes look bored.

He was late tonight. The head witch Tracy sat impatiently at the door step waiting for him. The new comers to the witch family , sat impatiently around the dinner table , staring at the food which had gone cold already. Finally footsteps were heard from far away. He was still two streets away when Tracy ordered the candles to be lit and the food to be roasted once more. He liked his meat warm and chewy unlike the rest who did not care a bit for her cooking. And so , she made them wait every night for him. Little did they know , he liked to act important, hence the deliberate delay every night. It was after all a good decision to host the witches , he thought to himself as he entered his house, specially Tracy who loved to cook for anyone who cared to praise her.

Time for self : ME time !

Me time. Like the one I have taken out now to write this post ?

Or the time I find to read other posts that would be written about this theme in hope to learn a bit from other wise ladies ( and men if they wrote).

Often I think Me time is just an illusion. but its a beautifully satisfying illusion I admit 😀

How you take out time mostly depends on what you like to do, since each activity/hobby has a place and time. you would not imagine cooking in middle of night, will you ? Well I can not since I have an open kitchen where you can not stand in winter nights for more than making a cup of tea for yourself !

I do not like days I miss on reading and writing. While reading a book regularly looks like a lot of effort , it is not. I spend 15 min travel time in reading and 20-30 minutes before I sleep on the book. Also, the days my cab is late ( which happens 2 times a week for sure) , you will always find me reading.

Also the time I travel on weekends in the metro , I prefer to keep my phone inside bag and rather read the 30-40 min I got.

While writing takes much more time and you have to sit on the laptop with a concentration of atleast half hour , I try to write bits and pieces of prose articles ( and even poetry) in phone notes / email drafts whenever the thought strikes. Early morning ( my morning is 11 am though ), with  a cup of tea in hand , I sit to assemble these thoughts into something meaningful. If not , then I do it from office since I get a bit free time to read and write in middle of other tasks.

Writing also involves reading others – to be inspired , to learn , to be amused and entertained , to share and to expand your horizons. This reading can be done on phone while you travel or better if you own a tab. you can save the pages once online and read them later. I try to spend 2-3 hours each weekend on reading various articles. Most articles get delivered to my inbox making it easier for me to read from my phone.

Another activity I enjoy is to walk. To notice things and people around. Most days , I follow the walk-n-talk advice of idea 😀  All my calls to my mother are done while I am walking to and fro the market or in park , or going to metro station ( which happens to be a walk of 20+ min each time ).

Latest and the last hobby for me is cooking. I pack my dinner almost daily and I try to prepare it on my own. But i do not get to try new dishes on weekdays since I am in a hurry to get ready and cook at same time. Hence the weekends I go home, I spend in kitchen. My mom loves it ’cause she can be free of kitchen duty for 2 days and I get the kitchen to myself to try all new dishes I want. win win situation ! Next week, I try the same dish at my place 🙂

So that’s My time and how I spend it.

And hope that I keep finding time like this after I am married and have extra responsibilities too.

Some blogs , some other stuff.

As a kid , I used to wait for the sunday ice creme treat from dad. and even before he could reach the shop , i would sit in front of the gate, waiting for him.

You know what reminds me of this image in my head ? Deboshree !! Every time she post on her blog , I wait for her to start checking other blogs. And finally I would get an email of her liking the post , followed by her comment. How much I always look forward to her words on my posts !!

😀

She is one of the few people whom I not just think but feel and know I would love having as my friend.

Witty and sensible , her blog is pure delight to read .

( This is a cue for you to finally click on the hyperlink and read her blog  😛 )

Now that I am finally writing this post , Let me introduce you to another wonderful blog I am hooked to these days. And its NOT a poetry / story blog. This time I am stalking a cookery blog. Such easy , yummy and mostly indian ones. One reason might be that , I have taken up cooking a little more serious now days since I am fed up of eating out (and the results are all great , trust me ) Some day If I ever start posting food pics and recepies,  not to be surprised people .. Till then, do check this blog  by @Womod/Pinksocks

Sadly I am not reading many of the blogs I so love and more sad is the fact that I have no idea why I do not get time for them. April was one month where I could not even finish 2 novels !! ( and I have a goal of 51 for 2012 ) ! But this month looks much better in all aspects .

I finally joined gym (after trying to avoid it from some weeks ) thanks to a tempting offer of some new dresses being gifted to me by a friend !  😀

And my group book review blog can finally see some posts from me again !

Also, I might be soon bidding farewell to two very dear friends , which I can bear knowing that its their shining moment 🙂

No more for now ( I am tired of typing  😛 )

More soon !!
Keep blogging and Stay nice to all !

Love !

At the Grocer’s

She picked her stuff like colors – yellow bell peppers , green beans , cottage cheese , ripe tomatoes , onions , and lot of spices. He watched her with a curious look.

Finally he dared to ask , “Darling, are you cooking tonight ?”
“Not today. But very soon I will.”
“Then this shopping ?”
“My cooking classes begin tomorrow.” she proudly declared.

Prompted by vivekisms to write a 55 word story  on “At the Grocer’s”

Cleansing act

Cooking was a passion with both of them. He just took it a step further – burning their negativity, the cleansing act. The dough was kneaded together by both. Lumps of it would be rolled and baked till burnt. Each would tell of the fear, anger or temptation they had the past week. Then it was time for celebrating love – by baking the perfect cake and having it with ice creme to melt away the sadness. It always worked even if they sometimes skipped the burnt bread part !
